Belmont Manor & Historic Park

October 15, 2022

When you think of Howard County, Maryland, you may not be thinking of the Belmont Estate. However, in the Colonial period, the Belmont Estate was a forced labor farm and one of the earliest in the state. You may have read that the Belmont Estate was the "Moore's Morning Choice" during the Colonial period, and now you can see and learn about the history of the place. It is located at 6555 Belmont Woods Rd, Elkridge, MD 21075.

The estate was built in 1738 and has changed hands many times over the years. Over the years, it has been used for many purposes, from raising racehorses to being a conference facility for the Smithsonian Institute. Today, the estate is owned by Howard County Recreation and Parks Government, which is committed to preserving its historic properties. This includes the preservation of the historic manor house and the surrounding grounds.

In recent years, the Howard County government has acquired the Belmont plantation for public use. It is one of the area's oldest Colonial-era plantations. Although the government is still determining a final plan, the county has begun work to preserve the history of the property. The name of the park will be "Belmont Manor & Historic Park."

Continuing the theme of family, the property contains two houses that date back to the late 1700s. The Brumbaugh House is located at 5825 Main Street, and it was once the home of local physician Dr. Benjamin Bruce Brumbaugh and his wife. The family owned the property, and made house calls to local residents. Whether you have a large family or a small child's party, this place has a place for you and everyone.

From 1738 to 1962, Belmont Manor and Historic Park were the home of notable families. The manor house, carriage house, and caretaker's house were all built by Caleb Dorsey, an early settler in Elkridge. Afterwards, the property was passed to the Smithsonian Institute, which converted the property into a conference center. In 1983, the American Chemical Society bought the property and continued the tradition of excellent hospitality. In 2004 the estate was purchased by Howard Community College. Today, the Belmont hosts a variety of events, including holiday parties, meetings, and weddings.
